Chapter 11

Not a single dead body that I could see was whole.

Some were more mutilated than others, but based on the torn-off limbs, the crushed skulls, and the huge claw marks on the surrounding vehicles, this was the work of a dragon.

Possibly more than one.

There was a large fire pit in the center of the area I stood in, but further ahead, I could see a few booths with handmade clothes or jewelry on display for people to buy.

This was obviously a gathering of some sort, though it was disorganized and quite small.

“Oh, my god,” Ally breathed as she stepped into the clearing behind me. “What the hell is this?”

“It looks like a barter fair of some sort,” I said, and I pointed the way we were headed. “I can see a couple of makeshift booths down there.”

“A barter fair?” Ally’s eyes narrowed on the dead bodies all around. “How do you know that?”

“Barter fairs are pretty common in Washington,” I explained with a shrug.

“I don’t think I’ve ever even heard of a barter fair,” Ally mused.

“Yeah, I would imagine they’re not very common in upper-class Connecticut,” I chuckled. “It looks like an illegal barter fair, considering it’s out in the woods in the middle of nowhere. Most of the legal ones take place in fairgrounds or designated areas, and there’s usually a lot of signs, and a lot more people.”

“You think they were illegally here?” Ally asked.

“I’m pretty certain of it,” I said.

“Wow,” she sighed and rolled her eyes. “So, they just came to the woods and set up here? For what?”

“Well, a lot of barter fairs are really cool,” I explained.

“You can get crystals, tarot readings, handmade goods, and some people sell their art. Most of the stuff is actually really interesting, and it’s usually full of quirky and eccentric but otherwise harmless people. However, there are some that are just excuses for people to get together and do drugs.”

“Soooo, I’m guessing this one is the latter,” Ally said.

“I would say so,” I laughed. “My guess is that these people set up here for the meteor storm. Hippies kind of like those sorts of things.”

“Meteor storms?” Ally’s red eyebrows pulled together.

“Anything relating to space I guess,” I chuckled. “They like eclipses and full moons and those sorts of things. It looks like these people were trying to host some sort of last-minute event and got attacked after the meteor storm hit.

Their fire probably drew the dragons right in.”

I gestured over to one of the vans that had scratch marks on the top and a hippie corpse hanging out the side.

One or more dragons had definitely come through and demolished the place and everyone in it. The people hadn’t stood a chance, especially if they were as high as I kinda figured they were.

“Well, what do you think?” Ally asked. “Should we take a look around?”

“Do you want any weed or molly?” I asked her with a raised eyebrow.

“I don’t even know what molly is.” Ally frowned and cocked her head to the side innocently.
